The Brief

Techies Without Borders (TWB) is a global non-profit focused on using technology to improve access to education and healthcare in underserved communities. Their flagship initiative, CMES (Continuing Medical Education Solutions), delivers essential medical training through offline-first technology—using USB drives and Raspberry Pi devices to reach healthcare workers in areas with limited internet and infrastructure.

The challenge was to support and stabilise the existing CMES web app, ensuring it functions reliably while introducing a key feature that enables users to update content via mobile internet. The goal was to improve usability and ensure the platform continues to support healthcare professionals without disruption.

Strategy

In a solution like CMES, reliability is critical—especially in low-resource environments where users depend on consistent access. Our focus was on strengthening the existing system rather than rebuilding it. We prioritised identifying and resolving bugs that impact usability, while ensuring the platform remains stable across different use cases.

At the same time, we introduced a practical enhancement—mobile tethering functionality—designed specifically for environments with limited connectivity. The approach was to add meaningful functionality without adding complexity, ensuring the system remains easy to use and dependable in real-world conditions.

App Support & Maintenance

Provided ongoing support for the CMES web app, focusing on stability, performance and usability. This included identifying and fixing bugs, improving load times and resolving UI issues impacting user experience. Regular testing and updates ensured the platform remains reliable across devices, supporting smooth access to educational content in remote and low resource environments.

Mobile Tethering Functionality

We developed the mobile tethering functionality, enabling the CMES device to connect to mobile internet. This allows users to update content without relying on fixed infrastructure—making the platform more practical and usable in remote or low-connectivity environments. The feature was built to be simple, reliable, and aligned with how the system is used on the ground
